The best siding for hail in Kansas is the one that stays intact in 1.75 inch stones and still handles a freeze, and no siding does everything. Manufacturer-cited tests put engineered wood first, fiber cement next with dents, and standard vinyl last, while steel dents or holds up depending on gauge. Independent test data on siding is thin, so treat every ranking below as a starting point.
This article compares vinyl, fiber cement, steel and engineered wood against hail, Wichita winters, cost and insurance.

What is the best siding for hail?
Start with the evidence on the best siding for hail. Engineered wood maker LP reports a test at the National Wind Institute’s Debris Impact Facility at Texas Tech University. LP’s hail page says its SmartSide siding showed no impact from 1.75 inch hail at 81 mph. The same page says fiber cement dented 0.082 to 0.201 inches under 1.75 inch hail at 74 mph, and vinyl fractured under 1.25 inch hail at 57 mph.
LP sells the winning product, so the comparison favors it by design. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) says why independent numbers are scarce. Its hailstorm demonstration report called for standardized test methods for siding because “no standards exist for these items.”
| Siding | Hail behavior reported | 2025 Wichita modeled job |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | Fractured at 1.25 inches, 57 mph (LP test) | $17,282, 93.7% recouped |
| Fiber cement | Dented at 1.75 inches, 74 mph (LP test) | $21,235, 104.7% recouped |
| Engineered wood | No impact at 1.75 inches, 81 mph (LP test) | Not modeled |
| Steel | Thin gauges dent more; no test found | Not modeled |
The cost column comes from the 2025 Cost vs. Value report for Wichita. Those are modeled large jobs from Verisk costs and real estate agent opinions, not a typical bill.
How big is the hail siding has to survive in Kansas?
Bigger than most test stones. The Insurance Information Institute counted 375 major hail events (1 inch or larger) in Kansas in 2025. On June 13, 2026, the National Weather Service in Wichita recorded hail up to 4.00 inches north of Winfield and 2.75 inches northwest of Winfield.
IBHS built a test house with vinyl and fiber cement siding. Its stones were 1 inch at 51 mph, 1.5 inches at 63 mph and 2 inches at 76 mph. Siding takes hits differently from a roof. LP’s hail blog notes that wind often drives hail sideways into walls.
Is vinyl siding a bad choice for hail?
Thin vinyl is rarely the best siding for hail. CertainTeed says “Hail and flying debris can crack or dent thin vinyl, opening pathways for water intrusion.” Thickness matters. Builders’ guidance in Journal of Light Construction says ASTM D3679 sets .035 as the minimum certified thickness, most professionals avoid anything under .042, and products reach .055.
Cold adds risk. The same guide says “In intense cold, vinyl becomes brittle and can shatter from the impact of an icy snowball.” Wichita’s January normal low is 22.5 F.
Foam-backed insulated vinyl offers greater impact resistance, per Journal of Light Construction, and CertainTeed sells a reinforced line with a heavy-duty foam backer.
Does fiber cement hold up to hail?
Better than vinyl, but it is not unbreakable. Fiber cement dented in the LP-cited test rather than cracking or fracturing. LP also says that because fiber cement is essentially concrete, it is more likely to crack when water gets in and freezes, and that water expands by nearly 10 percent as it freezes. That is LP’s view as a competitor.
Fiber cement is a strong contender for the best siding for hail on resale: the JLC model shows 104.7 percent of cost recouped, against 93.7 percent for vinyl. Painting and caulk upkeep still apply. See our guide to exterior painting in Wichita.
How does steel siding handle hail?
Steel resists puncture but shows dents, so it is the best siding for hail only in heavier gauges. Western States Metal Roofing says 26 gauge is the residential standard and that “A thinner metal like 29-gauge is easier to scratch, puncture or dent.” Its article adds that anything from hailstones to a baseball can leave a mark on metal siding.
Dents are the reason to read your policy. Some policies carry a cosmetic damage exclusion, and the wording a Minnesota court applied, as Merlin Law Group reported in December 2025 (a ruling the U.S. Eighth Circuit vacated on July 27, 2026), covered roof surfacing: it barred payment for cosmetic wind or hail damage to roof surfacing. Ask your agent whether any similar endorsement reaches siding. Our ACV vs RCV guide explains how payouts are calculated.

Is engineered wood siding worth considering?
It is the top performer in the only side-by-side data found, with the bias noted above. LP announced a hail warranty for SmartSide on May 11, 2017, with a 50-year prorated limited warranty and 5 years of full labor and material replacement. LP also says engineered wood is often recommended where winter freeze and thaw cycles are frequent.
Read the warranty yourself. A hail clause in a manufacturer warranty is not insurance, and it does not replace a homeowners policy.
Will insurance pay to replace all the siding after hail?
It pays for covered damage, less your deductible. The Kansas Insurance Department says wind and hail deductibles are generally one to two percent of the insured structure amount. On a $250,000 house, that is $2,500 to $5,000.
Matching is the hard question. We found no Kansas statute or regulation that sets a matching standard for siding, so an estimate may cover only the damaged elevations. Ask your adjuster in writing how matching is handled, and photograph every wall before repairs. The Kansas Department of Insurance reported that insurers paid $879,074,368.54 on 82,498 storm claims in 2025, which shows how common these disputes are.
Next steps are in what to do after a hailstorm in Wichita and hail damage vs roof wear.
Which is the best siding for hail in Wichita?
- Want the lowest hail risk on paper. Engineered wood or heavy-gauge steel, with the caveats above.
- Staying with vinyl. Choose thicker panels, at least .042, or foam-backed.
- Want resale value. Fiber cement had the best recoup figure in the 2025 Wichita model.
- Replacing the roof too. Compare impact-resistant shingles and siding in one plan.
Best siding for hail questions from Wichita homeowners
Does hail damage vinyl siding?
Yes. In the LP-cited test, vinyl fractured under 1.25 inch hail at 57 mph. Hail dents and cracks thin vinyl, and cold makes it more brittle. Thicker or foam-backed vinyl resists better, but a large stone can still break it.
Is fiber cement hail proof?
No. It dented under 1.75 inch hail at 74 mph in the LP-cited test. It handles smaller stones better than vinyl, but water that enters damage and freezes can crack it, so repair dents and chips quickly.
What size hail damages siding?
For the best siding for hail, know the limits. The tests above show damage starting near 1.25 inches for vinyl and 1.75 inches for fiber cement. Wind-driven hail may hit harder. The National Weather Service starts severe hail at 1.00 inch.
Will my insurer replace undamaged siding to match?
Not automatically. We found no Kansas matching rule. The answer depends on your policy and the adjuster’s estimate, so ask for the matching decision in writing.
