Sumner County KS Roofing Contractor Guide: Wellington, Conway Springs and Nearby Towns

A Sumner County KS roofing contractor has to clear two checks: registration with the Kansas Attorney General and the permit rules of your town. Wellington requires a permit for re-roofing and runs its own Building and Codes Department. Mulvane issues roofing permits but relies on MABCD for contractor standing and inspections. Verify both before you hire a Sumner County KS roofing contractor.

This guide covers permit offices in Wellington, Mulvane and nearby towns, recent National Weather Service storm records, and how to avoid unregistered roofers.

Who issues permits for a Sumner County KS roofing contractor?

It varies by town, so a Sumner County KS roofing contractor works with a different office in each place. The table shows what the cities and MABCD publish.

Rural homes outside city limits fall under the county. MABCD lists “Sumner County (Planning-Zoning and Environmental Health, Wellington)” among the entities to contact directly for permitting, so call before you hire a Sumner County KS roofing contractor for a farmhouse or acreage.

What does Wellington require for a re-roof?

The City of Wellington lists re-roofing among the renovations that need a building permit. Its Building and Codes Department issues permits and does inspections for remodels, repairs and alterations, and it licenses building contractors.

The city warns that unpermitted work may not be covered by property insurers. It also notes that selling a home with unpermitted changes can mean costly repairs.

Applications go through an online permit portal where contractors and homeowners can submit forms, request inspections and upload documents. Call Building and Codes at 620-326-3871 for portal access, or City Hall at 620-326-3631. The city page does not post roofing fees, so ask for the current amount.

How does Mulvane handle roofing permits?

Mulvane posts a Roofing Permit Application on its city website. The city’s Licensed Contractors page says that since December 2016 contractors no longer need a city license to pull permits, but they must be in good standing with MABCD and keep a liability insurance certificate on file there.

MABCD schedules and conducts the inspections after the permit is secured. The Wichita-area department also lists Mulvane in a group of small cities where it provides some services, and says the permitting process “will always start with the small city.” Our guide to the Wichita roof replacement permit shows the MABCD side of the process.

Does a Sumner County roofer need state registration?

Yes, every Sumner County KS roofing contractor does. The Kansas Roofing Contractor Registration Act requires roofers to hold a registration certificate from the Attorney General to solicit or perform paid residential or commercial work, with some exceptions. State registration is in addition to any rules set by cities or counties.

Search the company in the Attorney General’s roofing registration directory. The directory states that a company with a status of Revoked, Not In Good Standing or Enjoined may not lawfully provide roofing services. Report unregistered roofers to (785) 368-6644. Read our Kansas roofing contractor registration guide for the full rules.

What storms has the National Weather Service recorded in Sumner County?

Two recent events show the range of wind threats.

  • June 13, 2026. The NWS Wichita event page lists a 78 mph gust at 2 SE Viola from the Kansas Mesonet, a 70 mph gust at Wellington Municipal Airport at 9:15 PM and a 62 mph gust at Conway Springs. Emergency management reported “lots of tree damage” in Wellington, and a railroad crossing arm was bent or broken 1 S of town. The reports are preliminary.
  • March 5 to 6, 2026. The NWS event page says a storm produced a few tornadoes over western Sumner County near Mayfield, with a top rating of EF-2 and 135 mph winds. It lists damage to farm outbuildings and numerous trees, and no injuries.

KWCH reported that a farm about seven miles west of Caldwell lost the roof and upper story of its barn, while the nearby house was not damaged. Early reports on the March storm disagreed on ratings, so use the NWS page for the current figure.

No reports for Belle Plaine, Mulvane or Caldwell appeared on the June 13 page. That does not mean those towns had no damage. Check your own roof after any strong wind. See our wind damage roof guide and the after a hailstorm checklist.

How do you vet a Sumner County KS roofing contractor after a storm?

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach warned of unregistered contractors after the March 2026 storms, which included a Sumner County tornado. He said consumers should “make sure their roofing contractor is properly registered before signing any contract,” according to WIBW.

His office recommends these steps for choosing a Sumner County KS roofing contractor or any other roofer:

  1. Ask for the certificate. Get a copy of the registration certificate or company number.
  2. Confirm the status. It should read “In Good Standing” in the directory.
  3. Collect estimates. Get at least three written estimates from different contractors.
  4. Check complaints. Look up the Better Business Bureau record.
  5. Know your right to cancel. Understand payment options before you sign.

Sumner County roofing questions from homeowners

Do I need a permit to re-roof in Wellington?

Yes. The City of Wellington lists re-roofing as a renovation that needs a building permit. Contact Building and Codes at 620-326-3871 before work begins, and ask if your contractor will apply through the online portal. Unpermitted work may also create insurance problems.

How do I check if a roofer is registered in Kansas?

Search the Attorney General’s roofing registration directory by company name. The status should read In Good Standing. Ask the roofer for a copy of the certificate or the company registration number. The Attorney General’s office can be reached at (785) 368-6644.

Should I file an insurance claim for storm damage?

Read your policy first. The Kansas Insurance Department guide says wind and hail deductibles are generally one to two percent of the insured amount on the structure. Compare your repair estimate with that figure before you file. Our roof insurance claims guide covers the steps.
