Siding Installation in Maize, KS: Materials, Timing and What It Costs

Siding installation in Maize, KS is a permit job handled through Sedgwick County, and the best material depends on hail, wind and winter cold. Vinyl is the lowest-cost choice but the most brittle in a freeze. Fiber cement and engineered wood take larger hail, at a higher price. Spring and fall are the easiest seasons to schedule.

This guide to siding installation in Maize, KS covers permits, materials, timing by season, and attributed prices.

Hail tests that matter for siding installation in Maize, KS
LP Building Solutions reports these hail sizes for three siding types, a manufacturer claim with no named test standard.

Who issues permits for siding installation in Maize, KS?

Start with the city and the county together. The City of Maize permits page lists a Roofing and Siding Permit application and a phone number, 316-722-7561. The city’s forms page says that for building and construction applications, people should contact the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD) at (316) 660-1840.

MABCD’s small cities page says it provides “various services (inspections, plan review, etc.) for some of the small cities in Sedgwick County” and lists Maize Administration.

The application for siding installation in Maize, KS is MABCD Form 62. It asks for the total valuation of the siding and the contractor’s license number, plus the Kansas roofer registration number. Call both offices before work starts to confirm who takes the application. Our Wichita permit guide explains the same MABCD process.

Which siding holds up best to hail around Maize?

Maize sits in Sedgwick County, in the same storm corridor as Wichita. The Insurance Information Institute counted 375 major hail events (1 inch or larger) in Kansas in 2025, second only to Texas.

No public standard rates siding for hail the way UL 2218 rates roofing. IBHS said in its 2013 hail demonstration report that it planned to “establish standardized test methods for siding and fenestration/glazing, since no standards exist for these items.” The best figures come from manufacturer testing, so read them as claims.

LP makes engineered wood siding, so its numbers favor its own product. LP’s article names no test standard. Shelter Insurance’s hail guide says vinyl siding “cracks or breaks” and aluminum “dents or punctures.”

The IBHS paper by Brown and Giammanco adds one general rule: damage to building components “generally begins with hailstone sizes of 1-in. diameter.” The Insurance Information Institute counts hail of 1 inch or larger as a major event.

How does vinyl handle Kansas wind and cold?

Vinyl siding built to ASTM standards should “Withstand winds of 110 mph, and most achieve a wind rating higher than that,” according to the Vinyl Siding Institute. For comparison, the National Weather Service recorded 64 mph at Eisenhower airport and 65 mph near Derby on June 13, 2026.

Panels only perform when installed correctly. Builder guidance in Journal of Light Construction covers the details:

  • Nailing. Fasteners go through the center of the hem slots, no more than 16 inches on center, without driving them tight.
  • Gaps. Leave a 1/4 inch gap at each joint for movement. Vinyl “expands and contracts with temperature changes more than any other popular siding material.”
  • Thickness. ASTM D3679 sets a minimum of .035 inch, and most pros avoid anything under .042.
  • Cold. “In intense cold, vinyl becomes brittle and can shatter from the impact of an icy snowball.”

Wichita’s January normal low is 22.5 F, so brittleness matters here. Thicker panels cope better.

When is the best time for siding installation in Maize, KS?

Pick a window by temperature, because caulk, paint and vinyl all react to it. These are Wichita climate normals from 1991 to 2020 for the National Weather Service, the nearest official record.

SeasonNormal high and lowWhat it means for siding
Spring (April)68.3 F and 44.8 FMild days, with paint near its limits
Summer (July)92.6 F and 70.4 FVinyl panels run at full expansion
Fall (October)70.8 F and 47.2 FMild days, before the first freeze
Winter (January)43.9 F and 22.5 FBrittle vinyl and paint limits

Paint is the main limit. Sherwin-Williams says “Traditional latex-based paints need temperatures above 60° F to cure properly,” while its Duration and SuperPaint lines “will allow you to paint down to 35° F.” It also wants at least 4 hours of dry time before moisture settles on the surface.

The average first fall freeze in Wichita falls between October 20 and November 4. Book fall work in September or early October. This Old House notes that fall or winter scheduling can lower labor costs. See the best time to paint a house exterior in Kansas for field-painted trim.

What does siding installation in Maize, KS cost?

No dated, Maize-specific price list is published, so use national 2026 figures as a range for siding installation in Maize, KS. HomeAdvisor (June 20, 2026) reports an average of $11,588, with $3 to $12 per square foot for vinyl and $5 to $14 for fiber cement.

For a 2,000 square foot exterior, This Old House (June 11, 2026) lists $4,000 to $20,000 for vinyl. Fixr (January 22, 2026) lists $9,000 to $28,000 for fiber cement, plus $1,000 to $2,500 to remove and dispose of old siding.

The U.S. Census Bureau puts the median value of an owner-occupied home in Maize at $276,200 for 2020 to 2024. The HomeAdvisor average is about 4% of that, by simple division.

The 2025 JLC Cost vs. Value report for Wichita models vinyl siding at $17,282 and fiber cement at $21,235, recouping 93.7% and 104.7%. Those are modeled larger homes, so use them to compare materials only.

Does lead paint or insurance change the job?

Two checks apply to many Maize homes. The first is age. The EPA lead rule covers homes built before 1978 and applies when work disturbs more than 20 square feet of exterior paint. Hire a certified firm in that case.

The second is storm damage. If hail cracked panels, the claim runs through your homeowner’s policy, and the deductible applies to the whole loss. See what to do after a hailstorm and ACV vs RCV coverage before you sign for siding work.

Siding questions from Maize homeowners

Do I need a permit to replace siding in Maize?

Probably, yes. Local code exempts roofing or siding repairs of 400 square feet or less in any 12 month period. A full replacement is larger, and the city lists a siding permit application. Confirm with the City of Maize or MABCD.

What is the best siding for hail?

Fiber cement and engineered wood showed smaller damage in the manufacturer tests cited above, and vinyl showed the most. No independent standard exists, so ask for the manufacturer’s impact data in writing. Our best siding for hail guide compares them in detail.

Can siding be installed in winter?

Often, but it is harder. Vinyl turns brittle in intense cold and paint needs 35 F at minimum for the best products. Check the forecast against the product limits above, especially for caulk and field painting.

How many squares of siding does a house need?

A square is 100 square feet. Measure each wall, subtract windows and doors, divide by 100, and add 5 to 10% for waste, per LP Building Solutions.
