Metal Roof vs Shingles in Kansas: Cost, Hail, Noise and Lifespan

Metal roof vs shingles in Kansas comes down to four things: price, hail, noise and how long you plan to stay in the house. Metal costs more up front and can last twice as long. Asphalt shingles cost less and are simpler to repair after a storm. Both are sold with the top Class 4 impact rating.

Here is how the two compare on a Wichita house, with the numbers and the source behind each one.

How much more does a metal roof cost in Wichita?

The 2025 Cost vs. Value report from the Journal of Light Construction prices both jobs for the Wichita market. An asphalt shingle replacement comes in at $28,123. A standing seam metal roof comes in at $46,180. On price alone, metal roof vs shingles is a 64% gap on the same size roof.

Read those figures with the job description in mind. The report models a large project: 3,000 square feet of roof, a full tear-off, new underlayment and drip edge, priced with Verisk estimating data. Many Wichita houses have smaller, simpler roofs, and the bid drops with the size. Our page on roof replacement cost in Wichita covers the ranges local homeowners usually see.

Panel type moves the metal price more than anything else. Standing seam hides its fasteners under raised seams and costs the most. Exposed fastener panels, the kind used on shops and barns across Sedgwick and Butler counties, cost less. The Metal Roofing Alliance, the industry’s trade group, puts metal at roughly two to three times the price of asphalt in general.

Which roof pays back more at resale?

Neither returns its full cost. In the same report, Wichita sellers recoup 34.4% of an asphalt roof ($9,678) and 31.7% of a metal roof ($14,661). The resale values come from a survey of more than 6,000 real estate professionals. Buy metal for its service life, not for the sale price.

Which roof lasts longer in Kansas weather?

The InterNACHI life expectancy chart lists 20 years for 3-tab asphalt shingles, 30 years for architectural shingles and 40 to 80 years for metal. The same chart warns that “Hot climates drastically reduce asphalt shingle life.” The normal July high in Wichita is 92.6 degrees, according to National Weather Service records for 1991 to 2020.

Run the metal roof vs shingles math over 60 years. One metal roof at $46,180 compares with two shingle roofs at $28,123 each, or $56,246 at current prices. That math changes if an insurance claim pays for a shingle roof along the way. With replacement cost coverage, a covered hail loss costs you the deductible, not the full roof. See ACV vs RCV roof coverage for how that works.

Which handles Kansas hail better?

Hail decides most metal roof vs shingles debates here. Kansas logged 375 major hail events in 2025, second only to Texas, according to Storm Prediction Center data compiled by the Insurance Information Institute. A major event means hailstones one inch or larger.

  • Asphalt shingles: Haag Engineering research puts the damage threshold at about 1 inch hail for 3-tab shingles and 1.25 inches for 30-year laminated shingles. Damage shows up as bruises, fractured mats and lost granules.
  • Metal panels: steel does not fracture the way a shingle mat does, but large hail dents it. A dented panel may still shed water for decades. Whether insurance replaces it is a separate question, covered in the next section.

What does a Class 4 rating mean?

Class 4 is the highest rating under the UL 2218 impact test. The test drops a steel ball of 1.25 to 2 inches from 12 to 20 feet, depending on the class, and the sample passes if it does not crack. Asphalt magazine explains the method. Class 4 uses the 2 inch ball.

Two cautions apply. A steel ball is not a hailstone, and a metal panel that passes can still dent. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety tests shingles with manufactured hailstones and reports that “not all impact-resistant asphalt shingles perform the same.” Our guide to impact-resistant shingles in Kansas goes deeper on shingle ratings.

No rating covers the worst Kansas storms. On June 13, 2026, the National Weather Service in Wichita logged 4 inch hail four miles north of Winfield. The state record stone, 7.75 inches across, fell near Pawnee and 119th Street West in Wichita on September 15, 2010.

How do insurance companies treat a metal roof?

Insurance can tip the metal roof vs shingles decision. Ask your agent two questions before you choose.

  1. Is there a discount for a Class 4 roof? Discounts vary by company and by policy. Get the amount in writing, for metal and for Class 4 shingles.
  2. Does my policy have a cosmetic damage exclusion? Typical wording reads: “We will not pay for cosmetic damage to roof surfacing caused by wind and/or hail.” Attorney Chip Merlin described a December 2025 court ruling in Minnesota that applied this exclusion to hail-dented metal panels that still kept water out.

With that exclusion in place, a metal roof covered in dents may not be replaced by the insurer. Shingle damage that shortens the roof’s life is functional damage, which is what a hail claim is built on. Our article on hail damage vs roof wear shows the difference. Is a metal roof louder in rain and hail?

Not by much on a house. The Metal Roofing Alliance says a metal roof installed over solid sheathing with attic insulation sounds much like any other roof in the rain. The drumming people remember comes from panels screwed to open framing on barns and carports.

Wichita houses do not have open framing under the roof. The local building department, MABCD, requires plywood or OSB decking on a reroof. See the Wichita roof replacement permit rules for details. The permit process is the same for metal and shingles.

What is the biggest problem with each roof?

Metal roofs

  • Up-front cost. Expect to pay well over the shingle price on the same house.
  • Dents and insurance. Cosmetic hail dents may not be covered.
  • Repairs. A damaged standing seam panel is replaced from ridge to eave, not patched.
  • Fasteners. Exposed fastener panels rely on screws with rubber washers that need to be checked as they age.
  • Neighborhood rules. Some homeowners associations limit roofing materials. Read the covenants before you sign a contract.

Asphalt shingles

  • Shorter life. Plan on one replacement, possibly two, over the span of a single metal roof.
  • Lower hail threshold. Standard shingles can be damaged by hail a little over an inch across.
  • Weight. Shingles weigh about twice as much as steel panels.

Does a metal roof lower cooling bills?

It can. The Metal Roofing Alliance claims energy savings of 10 to 40%. Treat that as an industry figure. Real results depend on the panel color and coating, attic insulation and airflow. Poor attic airflow hurts either roof, as our guide to roof ventilation in Wichita explains.

Metal roof vs shingles questions from Kansas homeowners

Is it better to have a metal roof or shingles?

Metal fits owners who plan to stay 20 years or more, want to buy one roof and accept that hail may leave dents. Shingles fit owners who may sell within 10 to 15 years, want the lower price, or live where covenants call for them.

How much does a metal roof cost for a 2,000 square foot home?

Roofs are priced by roof area, not floor area, and pitch and roof shape change the total. The Wichita benchmark is $46,180 for 3,000 square feet of standing seam. A smaller, simpler roof costs less. An on-site measurement is the only way to get a real number.
