Hail Damage to Windows and Siding: What Kansas Home Insurance Covers

Hail damage to windows and siding is usually covered by a standard homeowners policy in Kansas, because the policy covers the house itself against windstorm and hail. The harder questions are whether the damage is bad enough to beat your wind and hail deductible, and whether the insurer treats dents as cosmetic. How you document the damage and how your policy is worded decide most outcomes.

This guide covers what is covered, where insurers push back, and the steps that protect a claim in Wichita and Sedgwick County.

Hail sizes that cause hail damage to windows and siding
The National Weather Service size chart lets you compare storm reports with the dents and cracks on your house.

Does home insurance cover hail damage to windows and siding?

Usually yes. Insurance for hail damage to windows and siding comes from dwelling coverage. The Kansas Insurance Department shopper’s guide says coverage usually includes insurance against “windstorm or hail.” Windows and siding are part of the dwelling, so hail damage to them falls under dwelling coverage. American Family’s Kansas coverage page lists siding and windows as part of the home that Coverage A protects.

The guide does not discuss cosmetic damage or matching. Those details sit in your policy endorsements, so read them before you call anyone.

What does hail damage to windows and siding look like?

The material decides the symptoms. InterNACHI’s hail damage guide describes what inspectors look for.

ComponentWhat hail doesWhat to look for
Aluminum sidingInterNACHI calls it the siding most easily damaged by hailIndentations, easier to see when wet
Vinyl sidingEasily cracked and broken by large hailCracks, holes and split edges
Aluminum cladding on wood windowsDents and spatter marksMarks on horizontal surfaces
GlassAny window can break if impact energy is high enoughCracked or shattered panes

Spatter marks are a clue to the date of the storm. InterNACHI notes that they form where hail removes surface oxidation and then re-oxidize and fade over time, so photograph them soon after the storm.

What is the difference between cosmetic and functional damage?

Functional damage stops a part from doing its job. A cracked pane, a split vinyl panel or a hole that lets water behind the wall is functional. A dent in weathertight siding is the usual cosmetic example.

Some policies exclude cosmetic damage by endorsement. A Property Insurance Coverage Law Blog article quotes an AAIS-style endorsement that covers the exterior surfacing of walls, roofs, doors and windows. It still pays for “any functional physical damage to these exterior components.”

The wording varies by company. A December 2025 post on a Minnesota case quotes one exclusion that applies only to “roof surfacing.” Only your own endorsements show if yours reaches siding or windows. Our guide to hail damage vs roof wear covers the same functional test for roofs.

Will my deductible cover most of the claim?

For small jobs it often does. Hail damage to windows and siding can cost less than the deductible. The Kansas Insurance Department says many policies carry a separate wind and hail deductible “that is generally one to two percent of the amount of insurance carried on the structure.” Westfield Insurance gives an example of a $300,000 home with a 1% deductible, which is $3,000. At 2%, the same home carries a $6,000 deductible.

Compare that with published repair costs. Fixr lists siding repair at $1,280 to $2,380 per 100 square feet, with a $1,830 national average (updated March 7, 2025). Fixr puts window replacement at about $800 per window, with $450 to $1,200 typical (updated January 21, 2026). One wall of siding can land under a percentage deductible.

Full replacement is a different scale. The 2025 Cost vs. Value report for Wichita models vinyl siding at $17,282 and ten vinyl windows at $21,046, as large-project benchmarks, not a typical bill. See how deductibles work on roofing claims.

Will insurance pay to match undamaged siding?

Not automatically. Matching is one of the most disputed parts of a siding claim, and no Kansas statute or Insurance Department rule on it turned up in research for this article. Your policy language is what counts.

Other states have gone different ways. In December 2014 the Minnesota Court of Appeals required American Family to replace undamaged siding so the new siding would reasonably match in color, according to Altitude Community Law. Missouri’s insurance director once took a similar view in a 2001 bulletin, but the bulletin is now marked rescinded. Neither is Kansas law.

Some insurers sell a matching endorsement. Acuity’s matching siding coverage comes with limits of $10,000 to $40,000 and is “not available in all states.” Look for the words “matching” or “undamaged siding” in your policy.

How do ACV and RCV change the payment?

The Kansas Insurance Department defines actual cash value as the cost to repair or replace damage after accounting for wear and tear (depreciation). Replacement cost is the cost to replace with materials of similar kind and quality at today’s price.

On an ACV settlement, older windows and siding are paid at a depreciated figure. Ask the adjuster in writing which basis applies. See ACV vs RCV roof coverage.

A short sequence for documenting and reporting hail damage to windows and siding.

How should I document hail damage to windows and siding?

Good records decide a claim for hail damage to windows and siding. Start with photographs of every elevation, then close-ups of each damaged window, panel and screen. InterNACHI suggests wetting aluminum so dents show and feeling shaded areas, since damage is easy to miss by eye. It warns that chalk outlines exaggerate hit size, so shoot a clean photo too.

  • Date the storm. Use the National Weather Service Wichita event pages. On June 13, 2026, the NWS reported hail up to 4.00 inches near Winfield.
  • Keep the old pieces. Save broken panes, cracked trim and screens until the claim closes.

Our checklist of documentation for a roofing claim applies to windows and siding too.

Should I file one claim for the roof, siding and windows?

Report hail damage to windows and siding together with the roof, from the same storm. A roof, gutters, siding and windows hit by the same hail belong in the same inspection, so the adjuster sees the full pattern. Ask the adjuster in writing how your deductible applies.

The Insurance Information Institute counts 375 major hail events (1 inch or larger) in Kansas in 2025, second only to Texas. Our guide to what to do after a hailstorm in Wichita lists the first steps.

How long do I have to file, and how long does the insurer have?

Report right away. The Kansas Insurance Department advises: “Contact your insurance agent or company immediately to report losses.” It also says to get adjuster instructions before repairs and make only temporary repairs.

Under K.A.R. 40-1-34, the insurer must acknowledge your claim within 10 working days, finish its investigation within 30 days unless it explains why, and accept or deny within 15 working days after proof of loss. Kansas allows five years to sue on a written contract under K.S.A. 60-511, but a policy can set a shorter limit. This is general information, not legal advice.

Hail damage to windows and siding questions from Wichita homeowners

Does homeowners insurance cover broken windows from hail?

Generally yes. Windows are part of the dwelling, and coverage usually includes windstorm or hail. You pay the deductible first, often one to two percent of dwelling coverage.

Is dented aluminum siding covered by insurance?

It depends on the policy. Dents are physical damage, but a cosmetic damage endorsement may exclude them if the siding still keeps weather out. Read your endorsements, and ask the adjuster to state in writing why a dent is or is not covered.

Will my insurer replace all my siding if only one wall is damaged?

Not unless your policy or the law says so. No Kansas matching rule turned up, so wording controls. A matching endorsement helps. Ask the adjuster whether replacement siding is available in your color and profile.
