Best Time to Paint a House Exterior in Kansas: Month-by-Month Guide

The best time to paint a house exterior in Kansas is September through mid-October, with late April through early June as the second window. Those weeks give Wichita painters mild afternoons, nights above 35 degrees and enough dry hours for the paint to cure. July and August work only in the morning shade. December through February is too cold.

The reasons are in the local climate record and on the paint can label. Here is the month-by-month picture for south central Kansas.

What weather does exterior paint need?

Paint makers set the limits, so start with the label on the product you are buying. Sherwin-Williams, in its exterior application guidance, gives four rules that apply to most modern acrylic paints.

  • Temperature. “Traditional latex-based paints need temperatures above 60° F to cure properly.” Newer lines such as Duration, Resilience, SuperPaint and A-100 Exterior “will allow you to paint down to 35° F.”
  • Dry time. “Most products require at least 4 hours of dry time before moisture can settle on the surface.”
  • Dew. “Ideally, the temperature should be in the suggested range and above the dew point for at least 48 hours after application.”
  • Rain. Wait “a MINIMUM of one day after a heavy rain,” and only paint a dry surface.

Those numbers refer to the air and the wall, day and night. A 68 degree afternoon does not help if the siding drops to 30 degrees at 3 a.m. with wet paint on it.

Why is fall the best time to paint a house exterior here?

September and October combine three things a paint film needs: warm afternoons, nights well above the minimum, and less rain. Wichita’s normal rainfall is 3.05 inches in September and 2.85 inches in October. May, the wettest month, averages 5.17 inches spread over about 11 days with measurable rain.

Fall has one hazard, and it is dew. Sherwin-Williams warns in its late-season painting guide that “dew will form on almost everything as soon as the sun sets, and seep into the uncured paint.” The result is surface staining and poor adhesion. Count back four hours from sunset and stop there. In October that means the last coat goes on by mid-afternoon.

Is October too late to paint outside in Kansas?

No. The normal October high is 70.8 degrees and the normal low is 47.2. The deadline is the first freeze. The National Weather Service puts the average first fall freeze between October 20 and November 4 across the Wichita forecast area, and the earliest on record in Wichita was September 22, 1995. Check the forecast low for the two nights after each painting day, as well as the daytime high.

Can you paint a house in spring in Kansas?

Yes. Spring is the second best time to paint a house exterior in Kansas. The average last spring freeze falls between April 5 and April 14 in this area. After that, April and May highs of 68 to 78 degrees are close to ideal.

Rain is the catch. May brings the most rain of the year, so a job that takes five working days can stretch to two weeks. Wood siding and trim hold water after a soaking, and paint applied over damp wood blisters and peels. Give a wet wall a full dry day at minimum before the next coat.

Spring is also hail season. If a storm damaged the roof, gutters or siding, finish those repairs first. Painting is the last step on an exterior, after siding work and gutter installation.

How each Kansas season affects exterior painting.

Is 90 degrees too hot to paint a house?

The air temperature is not the real problem. Sun on the wall is. Sherwin-Williams puts it this way: “It’s best to avoid painting in direct sunlight, especially during the hot summer months.” Paint that dries too fast leaves lap marks and may not bond well.

Normal highs in Wichita are 92.6 degrees in July and 91.0 in August, and dark siding in full sun runs hotter than the air. Summer is not the best time to paint a house exterior, but the job is possible with a plan:

  • Start at first light and follow the shade around the house.
  • Paint the west wall in the morning and the east wall after lunch.
  • Stop when the wall is hot to the touch.
  • Skip days with a strong south wind. Kansas wind dries the paint edge too quickly and carries dust and overspray.

Can you paint a house exterior in winter in Kansas?

Not reliably. Normal lows from December through February run from 22.5 to 26.3 degrees, far below the 35 degree floor on cold-weather paints. Sherwin-Williams explains that when it gets too cold “the paint can stop coalescing, or melting together.” A warm spell in January may tempt you. The night after it usually rules the day out.

Winter is a good time to plan. Pick colors, get bids and book a spring or fall slot before the calendar fills.

What should owners of older Wichita homes know?

Houses built before 1978 may have lead-based paint under the top coats. That covers much of College Hill, Riverside, Delano and Midtown. The EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires firms paid to disturb paint on these homes to be certified and to use lead-safe work practices. On exteriors the rule applies when more than 20 square feet of painted surface is disturbed. Scraping one side of a bungalow passes that mark quickly.

Ask any painter for the firm’s EPA certificate before prep work starts. Allow extra days too. Old wood needs scraping, repairs, primer and dry time between each step, which makes the best time to paint a house exterior on an older home the long dry stretch of early fall.

Exterior painting questions from Kansas homeowners

What is the best month to paint the exterior of a house?

September is the best time to paint a house exterior in the Wichita area. Normal highs are near 83 degrees, lows near 60, and rainfall is about three inches. Early October is a close second.

How long does exterior paint need to dry before rain?

Latex paint needs at least four hours before moisture reaches it, according to Sherwin-Williams. Oil-based products need longer. Read the label for the product you are using.

What temperature is too cold to paint outside?

Below 35 degrees for paints made for low temperatures, and below 50 to 60 degrees for traditional latex. The limit applies to the surface and to the night after you paint.

How much does it cost to paint a 2,000 square foot house?

It depends on the siding material, the number of stories, how much scraping and repair the old finish needs, and the paint line. A written bid after a walk-around is the only number worth comparing.

Should I paint before or after replacing windows?

After. New trim and caulk lines get painted once, with the rest of the house. See window installation for how the two jobs fit together.
