5 Inch vs 6 Inch Gutters: Which Size Does a Wichita House Need?

5 inch vs 6 inch gutters comes down to how much roof drains into each run. A 5 inch K-style gutter is the common size and suits smaller roof areas. A 6 inch gutter holds more water and fits larger roofs, steeper pitches and the short, intense downpours that Wichita gets. NOAA’s Atlas 14 rates a 10-year, 5-minute storm at downtown Wichita at 8.03 inches per hour.

Below is the capacity gap in 5 inch vs 6 inch gutters, the sizing method, a Wichita rainfall table and a worked example by roof pitch.

5 inch vs 6 inch gutters: what is the real difference?

Capacity, downspout size and price. LeafFilter lists 1.2 gallons per foot for a typical 5 inch K-style gutter and 2 gallons per foot for 6 inch. It suggests 6 inch for roofs of about 1,400 square feet and up, and says it costs $0.50 to $1 more per foot with heavier, larger brackets.

The drainage capacity figures are adjusted units. They already assume you have multiplied roof area by a pitch factor and a rainfall rate, as the next section shows.

How do you size a gutter for a roof?

Settle 5 inch vs 6 inch gutters with the pitch and rainfall method. The City of Naples, Florida, publishes it in its Stormwater Standards Handbook supplement (updated August 2021), and This Old House (updated April 20, 2026) gives the same pitch factors.

  1. Measure the drainage area. Find the roof area that drains to one gutter run. On a complex roof, add every section that feeds that run.
  2. Apply the pitch factor. Flat to 3-in-12 is 1.0, 4-in-12 to 5-in-12 is 1.05, 6-in-12 to 8-in-12 is 1.1, 9-in-12 to 11-in-12 is 1.2 and 12-in-12 or higher is 1.3.
  3. Multiply by rainfall intensity. Use the local maximum rate in inches per hour.
  4. Compare to capacity. If the result is above 5,520, step up to 6 inch K-style, which handles 7,960.

If the result still exceeds the gutter, Naples lists three fixes: a larger gutter, more slope than the standard 1/4 inch per 10 feet, or extra downspouts.

How hard does it rain in Wichita?

Hard, in short bursts. NOAA Atlas 14, Volume 8, Version 2 gives these point estimates for downtown Wichita (37.6872 N, 97.3301 W), in inches per hour, by average recurrence interval.

Duration1 year10 year100 year
5 minutes5.148.0311.3
15 minutes3.064.786.73
60 minutes1.382.273.43

Gutters see the 5-minute rate because a downpour hits the roof before it slows down. Over a year the NWS climate normals for Wichita list 34.31 inches of rain, with 5.17 inches in May.

Naples uses a maximum rate of 7.8 inches per hour for its own design. Wichita’s 10-year, 5-minute figure of 8.03 is a little higher, so Wichita roofs need slightly more capacity than the Naples example.

How much roof can one gutter run handle in Wichita?

Dividing each gutter’s capacity by the pitch factor and 8.03 inches per hour gives the roof area one run can drain. This is our own arithmetic using the Naples method and the NOAA 10-year, 5-minute rate, rounded down. It is a planning guide, not a code requirement.

Roof pitchFactor5 inch K-style6 inch K-style
Flat to 3-in-121.0about 680 sq ftabout 990 sq ft
4-in-12 to 5-in-121.05about 650 sq ftabout 940 sq ft

12-in-12 or higher1.3about 520 sq ftabout 760 sq ft

For 5 inch vs 6 inch gutters, this table is the quickest check. A 6-in-12 roof section of 700 square feet therefore overloads a 5 inch run but fits a 6 inch run. These figures are per gutter run, which is why adding a downspout and splitting the area often works as well as a bigger gutter.

When do you need 6 inch gutters instead of 5 inch?

Three situations push a house toward the larger size.

  • Large drainage area. Angi says 6 inch K-style gutters fit roof areas of 5,500 to 8,000 square feet, and that steep roofs benefit from 6 inch even when small.
  • Steep pitch or valleys. This Old House warns that valleys can concentrate a large volume of water at one point and may need extra capacity or more downspouts.
  • Short fascia. LeafFilter notes that a 6 inch gutter can cover the full face of a short fascia board.

This Old House also says that adding downspouts can be more effective than enlarging the gutter. Before you pay for the upgrade, ask the installer to show the drainage area per downspout.

What downspout size goes with each gutter?

This Old House gives a rule of thumb of 1 square inch of downspout opening per 100 square feet of roof area. The capacities follow from it.

DownspoutRoof area it handles
Rectangular 2×3 inch600 sq ft
Rectangular 3×4 inch1,200 sq ft
Round 3 inch706 sq ft
Round 4 inch1,255 sq ft

Angi pairs 5 inch K-style gutters with 2×3 inch downspouts and 6 inch K-style gutters with 3×4 inch. It advises one downspout every 25 to 35 linear feet, never more than 40 feet apart. This Old House adds that runs of 60 feet or longer need at least two outlets.

A bigger gutter on an undersized downspout still overflows. Check outlets and see how overflow reaches walls in roof leak causes in Wichita.

Does a 6 inch gutter cost more?

Yes, but not by much per foot. LeafFilter’s $0.50 to $1 extra per foot means a 150 foot perimeter adds roughly $75 to $150 in material, plus the larger downspouts and brackets. That is our arithmetic on the cited range.

Total installed prices are much wider. Angi reports professional installation at $4 to $40 per linear foot without splitting it by size, and LeafFilter cites Bob Vila at $3 to $25 per foot for K-style. Get at least two written quotes that state size, gauge and downspout count. Our page on gutters in Wichita covers the options.

5 inch vs 6 inch gutters questions from Wichita homeowners

What size gutters do most houses have?

Most homes have 5 inch gutters. Angi says K-style and half-round gutters are both commonly 5 inches, while 7 and 8 inch gutters are rare on houses. Larger roofs, steep pitches and heavy rain areas are the usual reasons to move up to 6 inch.

Are 6 inch gutters worth it?

In 5 inch vs 6 inch gutters, the larger size is worth it when your roof section is large, steep or fed by valleys. The extra $0.50 to $1 per foot buys about 67% more water per foot by LeafFilter’s own figures. On a small, low-pitch roof, 5 inch gutters with enough downspouts usually work.

How many downspouts do I need?

Plan on one every 25 to 35 feet of gutter, with 40 feet as the maximum, per Angi. Runs of 60 feet or more need two outlets, per This Old House. Size each downspout for the roof area it serves.

Can I switch from 5 inch to 6 inch gutters?

Often yes, but the brackets and downspouts change too. LeafFilter says 6 inch gutters are heavier and need larger brackets. Check that the fascia can carry them, and have a pro measure the drainage area first.
