Can You Stay Home During Roof Replacement? Noise, Pets, Kids and Parking

Yes, you can stay home during roof replacement work. Crews work outside in daylight and rarely need to come in. Most single-family tear-offs in Wichita take one to three working days. Expect loud noise during tear-off, shaking walls, a dumpster in the driveway and loose nails in the yard, so plan for pets, kids, parking and anything stored in the attic.

Here is what each day looks like and how to get the house ready.

What to do on each day of a roof replacement.

Can you stay home during roof replacement?

Most homeowners stay home during roof replacement work. GAF, the shingle maker, puts it plainly in a homeowner guide: “Should your roof need total replacement, you can still be at home throughout the work.” The same guide notes that a replacement “usually takes only a day or two and is done entirely during daytime hours.”

The real question is if you want to be home for the loudest hours. Some people work from the kitchen table through the whole job. Others spend tear-off day at the office or with family and come back for the afternoon cleanup.

How loud is a roof replacement?

Loud. If you stay home during roof replacement, the noise moves around the house with the crew. The day has three phases:

  • Tear-off. Crews strip the old shingles and underlayment with shovels and pry bars and drop them into a dumpster or trailer. This is the loudest stage.
  • Deck repair. Soft or rotted sheathing is cut out and replaced. On older Wichita houses with board decking, this stage takes longer because the local building department, MABCD, does not accept plank decking under a new roof. Our guide to roof decking explains why.
  • Installation. Underlayment, flashing and shingles go on with pneumatic nail guns. Expect steady rapid nailing over your head until the ridge is capped.

Video calls during tear-off are hard. If you work from home, schedule meetings for late afternoon or work from a quieter spot for the first morning.

Will pictures fall off the walls?

They can. GAF’s homeowner checklist warns that walls vibrate during the work and recommends taking down or securing TVs, mirrors and artwork, especially on top-floor walls and ceilings. Take shelf items down in rooms directly under the roof.

What should I do with my attic?

Cover it, even if you stay home during roof replacement and can keep an eye on things. GAF’s checklist says to “Temporarily move and/or cover valuable items stored in the attic.” Tear-off shakes loose dust, granules and old debris, and some of it falls through gaps in the decking. Drape old sheets or plastic over boxes, holiday decorations and anything you store above the garage.

If you have pull-down attic stairs, keep them closed during the work. Dust travels.

Is it safe for kids and pets?

Inside the house, yes. In the yard, no. Treat the yard as a work zone until the final cleanup is done.

  • Pets. GAF’s advice is direct: “Keep any and all pets indoors.” Dogs that react to strangers, ladders or nail guns may do better with a friend or at a kennel for tear-off day. Gates are often left open while crews carry material.
  • Kids. Shingles, nails and tools come off the eaves all day. Keep children out of the area under the roof edge, the driveway and the side yards. Many families plan a day with grandparents or a friend.
  • Everyone. Do not walk under the roof edge while crews are working above.

Crews have their own safety rules. Federal OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926.501(b)(13) requires protection for workers “engaged in residential construction activities 6 feet (1.8 m) or more above lower levels,” using guardrails, safety nets or personal fall arrest systems.

What about patio furniture and landscaping?

Move patio furniture, grills, potted plants and toys away from the house. Crews often lay tarps over shrubs and beds below the eaves, but delicate plants are safer moved. If the air conditioner condenser sits along the roof edge, ask the crew to protect it. Satellite dishes may need to be reset. Solar panels are a separate job: in Wichita, MABCD requires solar systems to be installed by a licensed electrical contractor.

Where do cars and the dumpster go?

Out of the way of the crew. GAF suggests you “Move your cars to the street for easy worker access.” The driveway usually holds the dumpster or trailer and the shingle delivery, and the garage door may be blocked for part of the day.

Keep the dumpster off the street unless your roofer has cleared it with the city. The City of Wichita’s right-of-way ordinance lets the City Engineer order obstructions removed and charge a usage fee “in an amount not to exceed two hundred (200) dollars per day” after notice. Your roofer should place the dumpster on your property and protect the driveway surface.

Tell your neighbors which days the crew will be there. Trucks, deliveries and noise affect the whole block.

How long does a roof replacement take?

If you plan to stay home during roof replacement, count on one to three working days for most single-family shingle roofs. Our article on how long a roof replacement takes in Wichita covers the details. These factors stretch the schedule:

  • Large or steep roofs, such as the Tudor rooflines in College Hill
  • More than one layer of old shingles
  • Board decking that has to be covered with plywood or OSB
  • Wind and storms. Crews do not leave a roof open when weather moves in.

Weather matters more here than in many places. Wind gusts reached 64 mph at Wichita’s Eisenhower National Airport on June 13, 2026, according to the National Weather Service. A good crew tears off only what it can dry in the same day.

What happens when the crew leaves?

  1. Magnet sweep. Crews run magnetic sweepers over the lawn, beds and driveway. GAF suggests asking for another sweep if you still find nails.
  2. Walkthrough. Check gutters, flower beds, siding and window screens with the project lead.
  3. Final inspection. In Wichita and unincorporated Sedgwick County, the roofer schedules the MABCD final inspection on permitted jobs. See our roof replacement permit guide.

Questions homeowners ask about staying home

Can I shower while my roof is being replaced?

Yes. A roof replacement does not involve shutting off water or power to the house.

Should I be home when getting a new roof?

You do not have to stay home during roof replacement, but it helps to be reachable on the first morning. If the crew finds rotted decking, the project lead may need your approval for the extra sheets. Being home at the end makes the walkthrough easy.

Do roofers need to come inside the house?

Usually not. They may ask to check the attic for daylight, ventilation or leak stains. GAF notes that contractors usually do not need to enter the home.

Can I work from home during a roof replacement?

Yes, with planning. Avoid video calls during tear-off and work in a room away from the side being worked on.

Do I need to be home for the inspection?

Not usually. The inspector checks the roof from outside. Ask your roofer what access is needed.
